Concert Music
A Last Song
Piano and Electronics (2025)
'A Last Song' is the second piece in an ongoing set exploring the recorded birdsong of the final surviving member of the now-extinct Kaua'i 'ō'ō' species. In this work a fragile, intimate dialogue is established between the piano and its detuned counterpart in the electronics, which make use of a set of microtonal pitches derived from the original recording.

Saxophone Quartet, Electronics, and Video (2025)

'Coney Island at Night (1905)' is a work that explores the detail and beauty that can be found in a stretched time space. A saxophone quartet interacts and blends with an electronic version of itself that has been slowed and stretched to create a haunting, atmospheric soundscape. This all occurs in parallel with a brief extract of Edwin S. Porter's short film of the same title, which has also been slowed to highlight its imperfections and grains.
Premiere: 21/06/25 by the Olias Quartet
Crossfade
Open Score and Electronics (2025)
Score Preview:
Composed for a concert centred around a dance music theme, 'Crossfade' takes the idea of a brief transitional moment between a fade in and fade out and extends it, presenting smalls cells of material which melt into each other and are eventually joined by a driving electronic track.
Premiere: 07/06/25 by Hispid Ensemble

Kalimba Study
Drum Kit, Kalimba, and Electronics (2025)

This work highlights the kalimba as its focal point, both as a sound source for the electronics and as an instrument being played live. The electronic sounds are all triggered by the player on various parts of the kit, with parameters such as dynamics, rate of notes, and area of the drum shaping the sounds in various ways.
Premiere: 19/05/25 by Sam Milton
Through Cracked Glass
String Quartet and Electronics (2025)
Score Preview:
An interaction takes place between a string quartet and a damaged reflection of itself, which is realised through samples played on a keyboard. The flawed relationship between these two entities is at the heart of the music, and was inspired by Wim Wenders' portrayal of angels observing human life in his 1987 film 'Wings of Desire'.

Orchestra (2024)

This piece began with a field recording from which material was transcribed, orchestrated, and then purposefully abstracted to create an atmospheric soundscape with a sense of stillness. In listening, the music should feel as though it has long been happening before we encounter it, and that it will continue after it has left us, as if it is something larger that has briefly passed us by.
Premiere: 16/01/25 by the RNCM Brand New Orchestra with Rosina Flückiger
The Earth Has Dropped Its Petals
Solo piano (2024)
Score Preview:
This piece explores different layers of sustain and resonance, achieved through varying degrees of pedal as well as precise fingerwork. The title is derived from a passage in Olga Tokarczuk's novel 'Drive Your Plow Over the Bones of the Dead' and its bleak tone is reflected in the distinct atmosphere and starkness of the music.
Piece has been workshopped, but is yet to be premiered

An open score piece in which four players create a whatsapp group chat and provide musical instructions to one another, with the sounds of typing and incoming messages combining with the live instrumental timbres.

Kaua'i 'ō'ō
Piano, violin, cello, and percussion (2024)
Score Preview:
This work derives all its material from the 1987 recording of the song of the final surviving male 'Kaua'i 'ō'ō' bird, which is now extinct. This material is presented in two contrasting sections: one dense, hectic, and colourful, the other sparse and lonely.
Premiere: 02/05/24 by Riot Ensemble

A collection of four rhythmic and playful miniatures explore various dialogues, interactions, and colours within the ensemble. The more substantial epilogue then views material from each of the previous four 'scenes' from a distance, like a faint memory.
